Jim Bousquet & Red River Dart Leagues: Building Community in Burkburnett, Texas
In a sport built on competition, one North Texas man built something bigger: community.
What happens when you remove money, ego, and pressure and replace them with purpose, service, and community?
That’s the question at the heart of a recent episode of The Falls Home Front. As I sat across from Jim Bousquet, president, CEO, and founder of Red River Dart Leagues, a nonprofit dart club, I found the answer. Jim is transforming downtown Burkburnett, Texas, one bullseye at a time.
Jim didn’t set out to build a regional destination or become the only authorized PPD location within 100 miles. As he told me on the show, he simply saw a need in his community and decided to fill it. Today, his vision has grown into a family-friendly social club bringing together veterans, families, and youth, all while contributing to the revitalization of downtown Burkburnett.

Stories like Jim’s are exactly why I started The Falls Home Front—to show how real estate professionals are using podcasting to build their brands and connect with local community leaders who are making a difference.
How Jim Bousquet Started Red River Dart Leagues
"If you have a dream about something or you have it in your heart, you wanna do something that you think is gonna be an amazing concept for the community or for the people that you love and know, go for it. Do it. Don't be afraid." — Jim Bousquet
Jim’s journey to becoming a community leader in North Texas began far from Burkburnett. Originally from Massachusetts—you can hear it in his voice—Jim married a 26-year Air Force veteran and spent 11 years in San Antonio before the couple returned to Burkburnett to settle down. Full disclosure: I had the privilege of helping them find their forever home here and later selling some of their properties. It’s been amazing watching what he’s built since.
But retirement brought an unexpected challenge: boredom.
An avid dart player, Jim began playing with another organization but quickly became frustrated. “To me, it was not fair to the players,” he told me. That dissatisfaction became the catalyst for something bigger.
"I decided to start Red River Dart Leagues. I visited the VFW in Burkburnett, Post 10455, and inquired about starting leagues and hosting dart competitions at their facility. They instantly said yes because we were going to bring members into them and actually put money into their organization"
What started as Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday night leagues at the VFW quickly grew. Tournaments filled Saturdays, membership expanded, and Jim realized he needed a permanent home for the community he was building.
From the VFW Building to Owning a Downtown Location
""The opportunity came to buy this building that we're in now. We cleaned it up and put the dartboards in. I started all this so I could give back and have a place for the community to go." — Jim Bousquet
Eight months ago, opportunity knocked. Jim and two partners purchased a building at 312 East Third Street in downtown Burkburnett.
The building now houses 10 steel-tip dart boards, with space for competition and fellowship. But more importantly, it’s become an anchor for downtown Burkburnett’s rejuvenation project—part of the rich history of Burkburnett that makes this “Boomtown, USA!” so unique.
The City of Burkburnett has taken notice. When a winter storm hit, Jim was asked if the facility could serve as a warming station. His response was immediate: “Instantly, we said yes. I will open up my doors for anybody who has to get warm, stay safe.”
Even the assistant town manager has joined Jim in shoveling the walkway. “We have a great partnership with Burkburnett,” Jim says. “They’re very excited about us being here.”
Why Red River Dart Leagues Is Different
"We decided to go non-profit. We don't make any money off of darts. It's not what it's about. I want the money to go back to the players if they put money in, or in our case, we have a lot of free leagues, so that way anybody can afford to play darts as much as they want." — Jim Bousquet
Walk into Red River Dart Leagues, and you’ll immediately notice what’s missing: alcohol. In a sport traditionally associated with bars and taverns, Jim made a deliberate choice to create something different.
The facility is family-friendly, handicap accessible, and open to all ages. Their youngest player is nine years old; their oldest is 68.
“We’re family-friendly. We’re not a bar. The concept of darts is bars. That’s not us.”
Instead of alcohol, visitors find a snack bar with wholesome foods, sodas, and water. Instead of smoky rooms, they find a clean, open space where fellowship comes first. This commitment to family aligns directly with the core values of the Burkburnett community.
If you’re a community leader like Jim with an inspiring story to share, I’d love to have you on the show. You can learn more about applying to be a guest speaker on real estate podcasts and how we can amplify your message.
The Only Authorized PPD Location Within 100 Miles
“I’m the only authorized vendor within a hundred miles of our location for people actually to play at.”
— Jim Bousquet
What sets Red River Dart Leagues apart—and draws players from across the region—is its status as the only authorized PPD (Partners Promoting Darts) location within 100 miles.
PPD is a major dart organization known for hosting some of the highest-paying tournaments in the country, with payouts reaching up to $2 million. The organization returns approximately 95% of player fees to competitors, and its online competition structure connects local players with opponents nationwide.
Through PPD, Red River Dart Leagues players compete against teams from Kansas, Wisconsin, Virginia, and beyond—all from their home base in Burkburnett. The league just launched its first PPD season with four teams, and interest continues to grow.
“We have people from Amarillo, Dallas, and further coming to play in our competitions every weekend because nobody else has this.”
— Jim Bousquet
What’s particularly remarkable is that PPD’s leadership was so impressed by Jim’s nonprofit model that they spent two hours consulting with him about how they could move in a similar direction. For Jim, the fact that a large organization like PPD would want to transition to a nonprofit model speaks volumes about its commitment to putting players first.
Community Partnerships in Burkburnett
“We kind of work back and forth with each other. We communicate very well. If they call us and they need help, we’re there. And that’s what it’s supposed to be. You help each other, you help the community.”
— Jim Bousquet
Red River Dart Leagues doesn’t operate in isolation. Jim has built a web of partnerships that strengthen the entire Burkburnett community—the kind of civic connections that make North Texas communities thrive.
VFW Post 10455: The relationship has come full circle. VFW members now play darts at Jim’s facility, and when Red River hosts large tournaments, the VFW sets up a bar to raise funds for their own organization.
Boys & Girls Club: A new partnership will soon bring children to the facility during the day to learn darts and math simultaneously.
“We have started the process with the Boys and Girls Club, where we’ll start having kids come during the day to learn how to throw darts and, at the same time, learn math.” — Jim Bousquet
CVMA (Combat Vet Motorcycle Association): Like the VFW, this veteran organization works alongside Red River to support community needs.
Gatherings of the Children: This Wichita Falls-based nonprofit advocates for abused children, accompanying them to court, escorting them to school, and ensuring they feel safe. Red River Dart Leagues will soon host donation boxes and fundraising events to support their cause.
City of Burkburnett: From downtown rejuvenation projects to emergency warming stations, the city and Red River work hand in hand. The city’s recently adopted strategic plan for 2026-2028 includes goals for downtown revitalization and community enhancement that align perfectly with Jim’s vision.
“We were asked if we could be a warming station for Burkburnett. Instantly, we said yes. I will open up my doors for anybody who has to get warm, stay safe.” — Jim Bousquet
Serving Veterans and Honoring the Past
As a veteran myself, this part of Jim’s story hit close to home. With his wife being a 26-year Air Force veteran and both being life members of the VFW, service to veterans runs deep at Red River Dart Leagues.
Currently, Jim is working on a significant project with the VFW and VA to recognize veterans whose graves have remained unmarked for 50 years or more.
“We’re working with the VFW and the VA to recognize veterans who have been gone for a long time. We want to recognize them in a way that they all should be recognized.”
— Jim Bousquet
The project involves placing markers on graves and ensuring these veterans receive proper recognition on Veterans Day and other occasions. Home Depot has donated 500 grave flags, and a vendor in Houston has contributed 100 full-size flags to line the cemetery.
Jim emphasized that while much of this work happens behind the scenes, recognition isn’t what they’re after. The goal is simply to ensure that long-lost veterans receive the honor they deserve, finally giving them the recognition that should have been theirs all along.
Why Community Spaces Matter in North Texas
“We’re the only business open in downtown Burkburnett in the evening besides the VFW. We’re bringing revenue into the whole community.”
— Jim Bousquet
Jim built this space because he believes people need somewhere to go—somewhere safe, welcoming, and real. In that way, Red River Dart Leagues is more than a dart club. They’re not just entertainment venues—they’re the glue that holds communities together.
For Burkburnett, a small North Texas town, having a gathering space that’s safe, affordable, and welcoming to all ages matters deeply. It matters to parents looking for activities their kids can enjoy. It matters to veterans seeking camaraderie. It matters to retirees looking for connection. And it matters to the local economy.
For my fellow real estate professionals, organizations like Red River Dart Leagues represent exactly the kind of amenity that makes small towns attractive places to live—proof that community still matters, and that when you put people first, growth follows naturally.
If you’re a real estate professional inspired to highlight local leaders in your own market, I can tell you from experience that professional podcast production services make launching your show incredibly manageable.

— Jim Bousquet
Jim’s journey from retired contractor to nonprofit founder offers lessons for anyone dreaming of starting something meaningful in their community.
He emphasizes the importance of working with local government and understanding the existing community landscape. But ultimately, he returns to a simple message: don’t be afraid to try.

— Jim Bousquet
